For Your Eyes Only

08 July 2021

The eyes are one of the most used organs of the body, but almost always taken for granted. From the moment we wake up, we do our routines, we work; we socialize and when we retire for the night, we realize the eyes are vital organs for our existence.

More than just an organ for visual perception, the eyes are also responsible for our depth perception.

This enables us to be able to adjust our eyes and estimate how deep our next step is, for example when we are walking down a flight of stairs. This keeps us safe from falls and tumbles.

Surprisingly, the eyes also have the ability to change shape.

This is done in order to remain focused on any movement or speeding object. Unlike a camera lens, the eyes can change the thickness of the lens to make sure an image being perceived is accommodated. This happens because the lens on the eyes is attached to tiny muscles which contract or relax when needed.

Another characteristic of the human eye is its ability to adjust vision and perception to the amount of light available.

When you move from ample lighting to a dimly lit to a darker place, the eyes enable us to see by automatically making the pupils bigger. The larger the pupils, the more it allows the eyes to collect more light from any available source. The pupil can enlarge for up to 16 times its normal size.

Apart from that, the eyes switch from using the cones to the rods in the eyes. The cones are the part of the eyes which accommodates different colors and enables us to see minute details of what we are trying to perceive. The cones are used when we are reading or watching movies, and generally when we are in a brightly lit area.

The rods, on the other hand, aren’t capable of distinguishing colors but it is more sensitive to light. So, when we are at a darker place where we strain to see the depth and finer details, our eyes are using the rods instead of the cones.

These are the reasons why eye health is a very important factor that we should also focus on among other things. However, as we constantly use our eyes it tends to deteriorate like any other thing.

There are many factors to consider as to why our eyes deteriorate.

One of which is aging. The eye is an organ that uses muscles and like how the muscles in our body shrink as we age, the same is also a reason why the eyes become blurry and not at their optimum.

Genetics is also one of the factors that will tell if a person will have bad eyesight.

According to studies there is a 1 in 3 chance of a person having nearsightedness, also scientifically known as myopia, if both your mother and father have it. This chance decreases if only the parent has myopia, which is 1 in 5 chances.

If none of your parents have it, then it is only a 1 in 40 chance of being nearsighted. There are two reasons that may be a reason for this one is that genes may dictate if a person is born with elongated eyes hence wouldn’t be able to focus on the details of faraway objects. Another is that genes may dictate if the muscles on the eyes are too malleable or easily shaped by our habits. So if a person has bad eye habits, then the eyesight will worsen faster than other people.

Nutrients are also something to consider in the quality of eye vision. The good news is that this is more easily fixed than other factors that cause bad eyesight. For example, a deficiency of Vitamin D causes the eyes to be dry and itchy. As the eyes find it difficult to produce tears, they might feel sore and sensitive to bright light more than normal.

For healthy cornea which is the transparent film on the surface of the eyes, vitamin A is needed. The cornea is the part of the eyes that helps focus on light sources in the dark. To prevent cataracts, age-related degeneration of the eyes, and night blindness especially when driving, it’s good to nourish the body with vitamin A.

Vitamin C not only helps build up our immune system to be strong against illness. It also helps build connective tissues in the body like collagen for the cornea. An antioxidant like Vitamin E could protect against oxidative damage to the eyes.

The retina in the eyes is the most susceptible to this kind of damage. Protective pigments in the eyes absorb then eventually filter the kinds of light that damage the eyes. These pigments are readily available from antioxidants like vitamin E-rich food.

Eating healthy is one way to prevent the degeneration of the eyes. Orange-colored fruits and vegetables are good sources of vitamin A. Examples of these are carrots, sweet potato, cantaloupe, and apricots. Vitamin C is very popular and known to be found in citrus fruits like lemons, oranges, and grapefruits.

But we can also find this vitamin in strawberries, tomatoes, peaches, and red bell peppers. For vitamin E, you can eat avocados, sunflower seeds, and almonds if you are not allergic to nuts. Salmon, sardines, tuna, and trout would benefit those with dry eyes. For people who have a hard time perceiving finer details in an image, kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, broccoli and peas are good sources of lutein that may help.

Overall, healthy habits would push off degenerative vision impairment. Not smoking and taking time off from the screen of the computer and smartphones also help. Your posture while working can also be a factor of not only your body’s comfort but also for your eye health.
