Scrapbooking: Good for Your Health

24 September 2021

Anne has always had a thing for crafts. She grew up taking film photos, arranging dried flowers, knitting hand warmers, and cross-stitching portraits. One habit she has never gotten rid of, even with the rise of the digital era, is scrapbooking. Some of her friends who were also into the hobby stopped when they all got more glued to their smartphones. But for Anne, it was different. It’s not because she’s backward and doesn't want to welcome change. For her, there’s just something so powerful about arranging her best memories on a page that puts her mind at ease.

Scrapbooking has long been around since the 15th century in England. Back then, they had something called commonplace books which were popular as well as the friendship album. Letters, poems, quotes were kept inside commonplace books. On the other hand, friendship albums are filled with messages and signatures of friends.

Scrapbooking eventually died during World War II. But in 1980, it became alive again when author Marielen Christensen compiled 50 volumes of their family history. She opened a scrapbooking store and within a decade has helped put scrapbooking back on the market.

Because of Anne and the few left scrapbookers in the world, scrapbooking is still alive and a hobby you can very well get into any time. More than just pretty papers of embellishments and glitter, scrapbooking is actually good for the body, mind, and heart. Here are some reasons why:

Scrapbooking lowers cortisol levels.

Cortisol is your body’s primary stress hormone. When it’s at a high, your glucose levels increase and your repair cells work double time. In other terms, it means that you’re in a high-pressure environment and you need to let the steam out. Scrapbooking is one activity that has been proven to help your mind relax. All you need is to take a deep breath, pick up your scrapbook materials, and get creative. Studies have shown that being into a creative hobby reduces anxiety.

Scrapbooking is a form of meditation.

An activity that requires focus and mindfulness, scrapbooking can be considered a form of meditation. It helps you get rid of all the thoughts in your mind and focus on the task at hand. This means being ultra present with the activity that your troubling thoughts go away.

Scrapbooking helps you express yourself.

What you can’t necessarily express through words, written or oral, you can pour into design and crafts over a page. Your color choices may represent your mood or the state of mind you’re trying to achieve. The bottom line is, when you look at someone’s finished scrapbook page, you’d quickly see a part of that person in a page. It’s deeply personal and at the same time, very communicative of what you feel inside at the moment.

Scrapbooking helps you relive the good memories of the past.

the past may not all be rainbows and sparkles but you get to remember those highlights while you work on your scrapbook. You get to remember the first time you received a gold medal on stage or a sweet lunch note from your mother. You remember the stolen glances you thought were thrown to you by your crush or the naivety of your first love. You might remember the bad too but then you get the chance to reflect that the bad actually helped you become the person that you are now.

According to research, when one reminisces about the past, new neural pathways are created in the brain. This is called neuroplasticity so when you organize your past thoughts and memories, it helps you exercise mental accuracy which will eventually support your cognitive abilities.

Scrapbooking welcomes you into a tight-knit community.

When you are surrounded by a group of like-minded people who put a sentimental value on things and share them in a scrapbook-like you do, that’s when you know you’re on the right track. You may bounce off scrapbooking ideas from each other that you might just use on your next page or book. There’s nothing like meeting your own tribe and feeling that sense of community within you and theirs.

You may also do it with your kids, a special someone, siblings, or friends. In this way, you bond all together through recollection of memories, inside jokes, and whatnot until a page is complete and the whole scrapbook is done.
